Urinary tract health for women

By Dr Emma Parry, Medical Ambassador for Lifestream

A urinary tract infection, also known as a bladder infection or UTI, can be very uncomfortable and distressing. The urine in your bladder should be sterile, with no bacteria, but when bacteria enter your bladder, a UTI can occur.

If bacteria enter your urethra, they are usually washed away by the flow of urine. However, in some cases, bacteria can travel up into your bladder, and take residence there. This causes inflammation of your bladder, along with painful symptoms. These include pain in your lower abdomen, and stinging when passing urine.

As women have a shorter urethra than men, they are often more susceptible to UTIs, with some women being susceptible to recurrent UTIs.

UTIs are treated with antibiotics to clear the bacteria. These antibiotics can have other effects. Antibiotics kill the bacteria involved in the UTI, but also kill 'good' bacteria which form part of your vaginal flora. This can lead to an overgrowth of other organisms such as candida (thrush). In some cases, they can cause a change in the bowel flora also.

Another health concern is antibiotic resistance. If multiple courses of antibiotics are required to treat UTIs, the bacteria can adapt and become resistant to them. For these reasons, it is worth considering a method of UTI prevention where the effects of antibiotics can be counteracted.

Cranberry supplements can reduce the chance of UTIs in women of all ages, and particularly in women with recurrent UTIs. This can reduce the need for antibiotics. If antibiotics are needed, a broad-spectrum probiotic is a good idea to top up your good bacteria, ensuring the correct organisms are flourishing in the gut.

Lifestream Advanced Probiotics  Lifestream Cranberry Soothe Lifestream Aloe Vera Juice

Lifestream Cranberry Soothe is a high-potency formula containing 60,000 milligrams of cranberries and 20,000 milligrams of aloe vera. It is designed to support urinary tract health and comfort, both for acute occurrences and as part of a maintenance program.

Cranberry supports the maintenance of your healthy urinary tract by preventing the adherence of infectious microorganisms to your bladder walls. Recent studies also show that cranberry can help stop H-pylori bacteria from adhering to your stomach lining, providing hope if you have a stomach ulcer caused by the bacteria which needs healing.

Aloe vera calms and soothes all mucous membranes in your body, helps maintain bowel regularity, supports the growth of friendly intestinal bacteria, and fortifies your immune system. This powerful combination helps to maintain a healthy urinary tract, combat bugs, and soothe bladder irritation.

Lifestream Advanced Probiotics contains 14 strains of beneficial bacteria, expertly formulated to support immunity, digestion and skin heath. The good bacteria are micro-encapsulated, so they survive your stomach’s acidic conditions. Micro-encapsulation also eliminates the need for Advanced Probiotics to be refrigerated. It is ideal after a course of antibiotics, and on-going, to support optimum levels of good bacteria.
