Can pure essential oils combat winter ailments?

Pure essential oils help in two ways to combat ills and chills. Firstly, they strengthen your body’s immune response and secondly, they help stop the spread of infection.

To strengthen your immune response, essential oils support the activity of white blood cells – the guys that fight off the germs in your body. The antibacterial properties of essential oils help to stop the spread of infection – they kill the germs before they get into your system.

How do essential oils work?

When essential oils are inhaled, the olfactory receptor cells in your nose are stimulated and an impulse is transmitted to the emotional centre of your brain, or the ‘limbic system.’ The limbic system is connected to areas of your brain linked to memory, breathing, blood circulation, and the endocrine glands which regulate hormone levels. The chemical components of the essential oil and the fragrance determine the exact response of these systems.

The second way essential oils work is by being absorbed into your skin through massage, a bath, or direct application. The second way essential oils work is by being absorbed into your skin through massage, a bath, or direct application.

How do you use essential oils?

There are many simple ways to use essential oils! They can be vaporised, bathed in, massaged, used when cleaning, or inhaled.

  • Vaporise: The Dolphin Clinic Electric Vaporiser, Ultra-Sonic Diffuser or Car Diffuser make vaporising essential oils easy. Simply add a few drops of one or more oils (plus water for the Diffuser), then sit back and relax knowing you are helping to boost your immunity and kill off any germs in your home.
  • Bath: Mix five drops of lavender oil into 10 millilitres of almond oil and pour into the bath. You will benefit from the inhalation and absorption of lavender
  • Massage: Rub an oil like Dolphin Clinic Chest Rub over your chest or back to help boost immunity and ease breathing. It is great for kids before bedtime, but is not recommended for babies under three months and must be kept away from children’s eyes.
  • Clean: Add a few drops of your selected oil to the fabric softener compartment in your washing machine, or add it to your floor wash, bench spray or bathroom spray.
  • Inhale: To help ease your breathing, directly inhale a blend like Dolphin Clinic Decongestant, or put a few drops of Dolphin Clinic Bronchial Benefit blend on your pillow to help soothe an irritating cough.
Always read the label and use as directed. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare professional. Dolphin Clinic, Tauranga.
