Five questions about menopause

Friday, June 8, 2018

1. What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural part of a woman’s life journey. It marks the end of the menstrual period and reproductive years.

2. How can a woman tell if she’s experiencing menopause?

The first sign is when the menstrual period has ceased for more than 12 months. If periods are still occurring but irregularly and with a light flow, this is called perimenopause – the stage before natural menopause. Perimenopause may last between two and five years or sometimes more, and the time varies for each woman.

3. What are key symptoms?

Symptoms occur due to a decline in the production of female hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) by the ovaries. Symptoms of menopause may vary between individuals and may include:

  • Temperature fluctuations (occurring in approximately 60 percent of women*)
  • Sweating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Stuffy heads
  • Worry and stress.

4. What can help women get through menopause?

Lifestyle management may help to relieve some of the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. This may include:

  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Ensuring adequate relaxation
  • Avoiding stressful situations
  • Quitting or reducing smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Decreasing caffeine intake
  • Ensuring good quality sleep
  • Wearing light-weight pyjamas
  • Avoiding obesity.
