In summer, our physiology can tolerate a few lifestyle mistakes, but when temperatures fluctuate and seasons change, the body is prone to imbalance. This is why colds, flu, and other illnesses spread so easily during autumn and spring.
It is important to ramp up health for, and during, autumn, because it is the last chance to prepare the body for the demands of winter. In cold months, we use a lot of energy keeping warm. Bacteria and viruses are rampant in heated and unventilated indoor environments,
so we need all our reserves and a fully functioning immune system to remain healthy.
We are each unique on the vast spectrum of health; some people are naturally blessed with healthy genes, while others need to work hard at it. However, one thing is certain, we all detest being sick! Putting some effort into preventive health, and making lifestyle adjustments, means that YOU control YOUR health.
#1 - Detox
Autumn is THE BEST time of the year for a physical clean-out, to kick-start your health and boost your immune system – poor gut health directly affects immunity. A detox removes the beneficial gut bacteria along with the bad, so don’t forget to repopulate good bacteria with probiotics afterwards.
#2 - Probiotics
Probiotics help maintain the natural balance of microflora in the intestines. People can get probiotics from fermented foods, or supplements. Research shows probiotics are particularly beneficial after treatment with antibiotics, and speed treatment of intestinal/bowel/vaginal/urinary tract conditions. They help reduce inflammation, and support immune function. Read The beneficial bacteria
#3 - Aloe vera
The transparent gel from the pulp of aloe vera leaves has been used topically for thousands of years for minor burns, sunburn, abrasions, and other skin conditions. It is taken orally to aid digestion, soothe the digestive tract, and as a gentle laxative. Read Healing through the ages
#4 - Spirulina
Spirulina is a spiral-shaped microscopic freshwater algae, well absorbed by the human body. Nutrient and protein-rich, it is an antioxidant, anti-carcinogen and potent detoxifier. It reinforces the immune system, supports healthy blood pressure and cholesterol, helps increase energy levels, and improves iron levels for people with busy/stressful lives.
#5 - Magnesium
The fourth most abundant mineral in the human body, critical to health and essential to more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, magnesium is a powerful relaxant for anything irritable, cramped or tense – whether mood or muscle. Magnesium keeps tabs on hormonal and blood sugar levels, both of which affect the adrenal glands – our stress monitors. Adrenal imbalance can result in various diseases, mental confusion, melancholia, hyperactivity, and difficulty coping with simple day-to-day problems. Read Magnanimous magnesium
#6 - Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for normal growth and development.Unabsorbed vitamin C is excreted in our urine, so we need a continuous daily supply. It is needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body. Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants blocking damage caused by free radicals. Over time, free radicals are largely responsible for the aging process, and play a role in cancer, heart disease, and conditions like arthritis. Taking vitamin C supplements and eating vitamin C-rich foods supports the immune system in its fight against colds and flu.
#7 - Krill & fish oil
Most of the health benefits of fish and krill oil can be attributed to the presence of omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), which are anti-inflammatories supporting heart health, brain function, immunity and positive mood, as well as healthy joints, hair, skin and nails.
#8 - Glucosamine & chondroitin
Recommended for extra joint support, and usually taken with fish oil, glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin form proteoglycans, found in cartilage, which help maintain free movement and comfort. We produce them naturally for cartilage repair, but sometimes through aging or injury we use them up faster than we make them.
#9 - CoQ10
CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) is a vitamin-like compound that aids in the production of energy. As the “spark plug of the cell”, its highest concentration is where we need the most energy – the heart, immune system, liver and kidneys. It is an antioxidant, defending cells against free radicals. CoQ10 is manufactured by the body, and present in foods, however, we make less as we age, or if we take statins.
#10 - MSM
Methylsulfonyl methane is a compound found naturally in milk, meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables. It is the biologically available form of sulphur that provides the raw material for protein and connective tissue synthesis. As a water soluble nutrient, it is estimated we need about 1/8 tsp a day. But as we age, we are likely to become deficient. MSM helps relieve muscle and joint conditions, is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, improves skin and hair, helps reduce stomach acidity and helps against allergic reactions.
