With the end of the year so comes the many social gatherings, Christmas work functions and parties. Not the perfect time to be trying to lose weight, right? But if you aren't going to learn how to control your appetite at these sorts of things then you'll find it hard with any time of the year. So best to start now.

Here's what tips I've learnt to avoid the Christmas food-hang-over.

Number 1: Drink loads of water before you go.

Number 2: Find out where your going for dinner 1st so you can scope out the menu and choose the most diet friendly and stick to it when you get to dinner. Don't be swayed by the fish of the day (unless you know for certain it was going to be less calories than your roast lamb salad).

Number 3:
Don't go overboard. Your plate of salad or whatever it is comes out and it is huge! Realise that you don't need to have a "clean plate policy". Always make sure you leave something on your plate. Or share it with people.

Number 4: Drive yourself there. This stops you from drinking too much as we all know that drinking and driving is a no-no. Plus you'll feel a whole heap better in the morning and won't have any embarrassing stories of what you did last night going around the office.

Number 5: Sit next to the skinny person. Watch what they eat. See how much they nibble on the shared platters. Copy them. When they eat something, then you can eat something.

Number 6: Share your desert. Or have a fruit tea. You'll get just enough sweetness to satisfy your craving.

Number 7: Not feeling full or that dinner was just so delicious that now it's all gone, you could just order another helping? Don't. Drink some more water, as it will help fill you up.

Number 8:
Don't be the first person to finish eating. Your stomach takes 20mins to recognise that it's full. so the slower you eat the more you'll be able to recognise that full feeling. You can also talk more with your guests or co-workers.
