Get rid of unwelcome parasites!

Parasites! Usually associated with our pets and animals, humans are also susceptible to hosting these unwelcome guests. Parasites are organisms that live on or in a host, depriving the host of nutrients at the host’s expense.

In humans, these parasites can cause a wide ranges of health issues, from mild discomfort to serious illness. Initially, you may not even be aware that your gut is hosting parasites until they have settled in and started to reproduce.

With your gut being home to most of your immune cells, a parasite-free gut sets the environment for these cells and the beneficial bacteria in your gut to thrive. These good bacteria support your immune and skin health and, with the gut/brain connection now well established, also affects mood.

Symptoms of parasite infestations

·         Diarrhoea

·         Abdominal pain or cramping

·         Nausea and vomiting

·         Fatigue and weakness

·         Weight loss

·         Itching around the anus

·         Anaemia

·         Fever and flu-like symptoms

Tips to avoid parasite infestations

In New Zealand, the most common parasites are usually picked up through contaminated water and sometimes food. Some, like pinworm, are easily transmitted by eating the eggs found on hands, bedding or clothing.

·         Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating

·         Cook meat to safe temperatures to kill any potential parasites

·         Handwash with soap and water, especially after using the toilet

·         Keep fingernails short and clean to prevent egg transfer

·         Avoid swimming in or drinking from contaminated water sources

·         Drink treated or boiled water, especially in rural or wilderness areas.

Natural herbs to reduce parasite populations

Wormwood and black walnut have long been used to reduce parasite populations in your gut. These bitter herbs create an inhospitable environment for the parasites and, after a few days, most decide to make an exit.

These herbs are key ingredients in Harker Herbals Intestinal Cleanse, a tonic designed specifically to cleanse the gut of parasites so that the body has a good base to keep itself well or heal itself when unwell. Intestinal Cleanse has been a core tonic in the Harker Herbals range for more than 40 years and is suitable for adults over 12 years.

Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional.
