Maskne (mask acne) is a relatively new term, coined by the current pandemic. The increase in mask wearing is causing skin suffering on the face, especially in people who have to wear a mask all day due to work or health reasons.

Masks can cause acne, redness, irritation, itchiness or blisters, depending on how your skin is reacting. This is generally because of blocked pores which don't get aired out, a reaction to the mask material, or friction with the mask itself.

Here are some ways to help repair and rejuvenate your skin if you're affected by maskne:

1. Wash your face regularly and use a gentle cleanser

Use lukewarm water and pat it dry with a towel. You should wash your face morning, night, and after taking off your mask. Then, use a gentle cleanser to help remove excess oil, sweat, and bacteria. Natural cleansers are best as they don't contain perfumes or alcohol which can cause further irritation. We recommend the Living Nature Vitalising Cleanser or Weleda Gentle Cleansing Milk

2. Use moisturiser

After you have washed your face, apply moisturiser to keep your face hydrated. Opt for a natural moisturiser to avoid clogging pores, like The Herb Farm Nourishing Rose Face Cream or theCream Face.

3. Have a break from makeup

The great thing is that if you wear no makeup on your face, no one notices! Go makeup free or only apply it to your eyes, to give your skin time to breathe.

4. Ensure your masks are clean and fit well

Regularly wash and air dry your fabric masks to make sure they're clean and dry every time you use them. If you use the disposable kind, throw them out after a single use so you're not adding dirt or unclean fibres back onto your face. It's also important to ensure the masks fit well, and are made from soft, natural fibres like cotton.
