Women’s health can be beautifully complex throughout her lifetime. As a woman moves through different ages, her body will move through different phases that may need different support than the phase before.
The Menstrual Cycle
When a female first starts menstruating, also known as “menarche”, the menstrual cycle causes the body to go through a lot of hormonal changes every month. During this stage it is normal for periods to be missed as the body and hormones are still finding their monthly rhythm up until the late teens.
A woman in her 20s, 30s and 40s should have a more stable 28–32-day cycle; however, variables such as poor diet, alcohol, exercise (too much or too little), exposure to endocrine-disrupting toxins and the big one…stress, could impact cycles. During this time individuals may seek support for period comfort, cycle regularity, and mood balance.
Perimenopause and Menopause
Then the next big phase of life, aside from possibly conceiving and having children, is perimenopause and menopause, which happens usually from the mid-forties through to early fifties. Perimenopause is often called the second puberty because of the hormonal changes that occur, some feeling that they start to go “haywire”. This is due to the gradual decline of oestrogen in relation to androgens, testosterone, and progesterone.
Due to our modern lifestyle, a rise in cortisol can be commonly seen at this phase of life too, usually due to work commitments, young family commitments plus aging parents to support as well. As a side effect to this busyness, if we add in poor sleep, poor diet, and lack of time for exercise and connection, it’s a slippery slope to hormone havoc.
Vaginal Health
Another area of concern women face is changes in vaginal health. This may be experienced as itchiness, irritation, discomfort, and/or unpleasant vaginal discharge. Often this can be down to a change in pH and an imbalance in the vaginal microflora; however, it’s always best to be checked out by your doctor.
A common concern is when women need to do a course of antibiotics which can possibly result in yeast overgrowth. We can support this delicate area with good hygiene practices, a healthy wholefood diet and regular exercise.
Iron Stores
There are many factors why iron stores may be low for a woman, from heavy periods, poor diet choices, digestion, and nutrient absorption, to pregnancy when nutrient demands are higher. It’s important to get your iron stores tested via a blood test if your energy levels are low or you are experiencing cold hands or feet, among other symptoms. Make sure you are eating bioavailable, heme iron rich foods to replenish levels and supplement when needed.
