MooGoo Natural Tanning Cream (formally How Now Brown Cow Gradual Tanning Cream) provides a natural, Gradual Tanning Moisturiser. Non-smelly and Natural Colour.
Many people enjoy having a bit of color and maintaining a healthy glow year-round, but without the harmful effects of sun damage. Self-tanning creams are a popular solution, but common complaints include an orange tint and an unpleasant smell. This inspired the development of a self-tanning cream that is natural, effective, and hydrating.
This cream uses a base of deeply moisturizing oils to keep the skin hydrated, helping to extend the life of the tan. It features two natural self-tanning ingredients:
- Dihydroxyacetone (DHA): Derived from a Canola-based source, it provides the tanning effect.
- Erythrulose: A sugar-based ingredient included to create a more natural tone, particularly for pinkish complexions.
To enhance its benefits, the formula includes purified EGCG (Green Tea Extract), a potent antioxidant compound known for its anti-aging properties. The purified extract is 90% concentrated, making it a highly effective addition. How is this new Tanning Cream different to the old How Now Brown Cow Gradual Tanning Cream?
Most good things take time, but that didn’t need to be the case for their bestselling Tanning Cream. After receiving overwhelming feedback from loyal customers requesting a natural, fast-acting tanning moisturiser, the brand reformulated the original to deliver exactly that. The updated Tanning Cream still offers everything fans loved about How Now Brown Cow—now with 2.5 times more DHA for a quicker-developing, natural-looking tan that doesn't carry the usual scent. Hyaluronic Acid has also been added to enhance skin hydration, support collagen production, and help the tan last even longer.
How do self-tanning products work?
Most self-tanning ingredients are either canola oil, glycerin or sugar-based ingredients that combine with the amino acids on your skin. Various amino acids combine differently, producing different tones of colouration from yellow to orange to brown. So very simply, the self-tanning ingredients make a tan coloured pigment on the skin that looks like a real tan, but is not a genuine tan which happens when our skin is exposed to UV. Because the colour is made by using the outer layers of skin, the colour will gradually disappear over a period of time as the skin sloughs off. So to keep the colour, it should be re-applied every now and then.

What ingredients do MooGoo avoid when making a moisturiser?
There are plenty of ingredients you won’t find in this cream—or in any MooGoo product. That’s because their formulations were originally created for family and close friends, with health and safety as top priorities. MooGoo avoids paraffin and mineral oil, both of which are petroleum-derived and commonly found in commercial moisturisers like Sorbolene. They don’t believe ingredients used in car engines belong on the skin.
MooGoo also steers clear of synthetic preservatives such as parabens and phenoxyethanol, despite their widespread use—even by some brands that claim to be natural. The list of ingredients they avoid is long, but just as important is what they do include: only effective, natural ingredients that support skin health—no gimmicks, no fads, and definitely no stem cells from Swiss apples or exotic jellyfish DNA.
