Skin health: it’s about more than just looks

You don’t look your age!

It’s such a flattering thing to hear. If it happens to you, it may be because your biological age and chronological age don’t match up. Lucky you! But what causes the skin to age?  What can we expect as we get older, and is there anything we co do to slow down this process?

Why Does Skin Age?

The factors contributing to skin again originate inside the body (intrinsic) and outside the body (extrinsic)

  • Extrinsic skin ageing happens when skin is exposed to sunlight (photoaging), smoking, chemicals, and pollution. Exposure to these extrinsic stressors releases free radicals, which damage skin cells and lead to skin ageing.
  • Darker skin is better protected from photoaging due to higher levels of melanin, which can lead to fewer wrinkles.
  • Intrinsic skin ageing happens due to normal biological processes inside the body that release free radicals. When you metabolise food into energy, free radicals are produced that can damage skin cells.
  • When you are young, your cells are very efficient at producing energy to fuel the different functions of the skin. As you get older, cellular processes can become dysfunctional with less clearing of free radicals. In turn, the skin becomes less resilient and less able to protect itself from external stressors.

Beyond beauty – taking care of your skin is taking care of your health.

Did you know that skin is your body’s largest organ?  In addition to being the physical barrier that protects you from external environments toxins and stressors, skin is an active immune organ at the front line of your body’s defense.

  • The skin absorbs 60 to 80% of everything on its surface. Skin care not only affects skin health but affects overall health.
  • When your skin absorbs chemicals, toxins, parabens and other harmful things, it is robbed of the energy and the components it needs to maintain healthy function. This decline in skin health is marked by fine lines, wrinkles and uneven pigmentation and dark spots, with rough thinning texture.

Ageing skin can have an impact on overall health. Compromised skin can no longer be repaired and restored as it once did.  Wounds are slower to heal, and the body can become more vulnerable to infection.

Sometimes what you don’t apply on your skin matters more than what you do apply!

  • The key to healthy ageing is choosing skincare that is safe.
  • Avoid chemicals, parabens, mineral oils, preservatives, alcohols, petrochemicals and fillers.
  • When done correctly, skin care can facilitate healthy ageing in skin and the rest of your body.
