The sustainability series - episode two

Monday, April 22, 2019

On Monday 22nd April we recognise Earth Day. Now an annual event, Earth Day began in 1970 when millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development on our environment. Since its beginnings, Earth Day has been used as a day of political action and civic participation when it comes to sustainability, in particular sustainability efforts on behalf of corporates, businesses and governments.

At Health 2000 our ethos of ‘where caring comes naturally’ is at the core of everything we do. For us, caring does not end with the health of Kiwis – it includes the health of our planet. As a company, we have always been conscious of our environmental impact and have been making moves to reduce this since 2014 where we were early adopters of bio-degradable bags. Since this time, we have continuously adapted our business practices to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible, and we encourage our suppliers to do the same.

In January 2019 we announced our latest environmentally-friendly initiative: 100 percent compostable bags and packaging in all 69 of our stores and for all our online orders. Alongside the move to home compostable bags throughout our stores nation-wide, we replaced plastic courier bags, plastic packing tape and plastic bubble wrap with either home-compostable or recyclable alternatives. Since making this change, we have reduced our environmental impact for plastic by over 2,000kg! That’s the weight of two and a half Rhinos, or almost as heavy as an African Forest Elephant!
